Why China · 中国制造

The factory of the world,
read cluster by cluster.

China does not manufacture as one country. It manufactures as several hundred specialised industrial clusters, each with its own price level, quality ceiling, minimum order culture and export habits. Knowing which cluster your product belongs to is the single largest lever on your landed cost.

The short version

Buying from "China" is not a strategy.

A buyer who asks five trading companies for a price on ceramic tile will usually get five numbers within ten percent of each other — and all five will be higher than the number available to someone standing in Foshan, talking to the kiln.

The gap is rarely about negotiation skill. It is about proximity, category knowledge and volume history. Every product has a place in China where it is made best and cheapest, a second place where it is made adequately, and a dozen places where it is resold at a markup to buyers who did not know the difference.

This page is a working map of where things actually come from. It is also, in effect, a description of where we spend our time.

Industrial clusters · 产业带

Where things are actually made.

Twelve of the clusters we work in most often. RAVORI is based in Guangzhou, at the centre of the densest concentration of them.

01

Guangzhou 广州

Guangdong · Apparel, leather, beauty, auto parts, trade fairs

China’s southern trade capital and our home city. Guangzhou is less a factory town than a market town — Zhongda fabric market, Baiyun leather, Shahe apparel wholesale, and the Canton Fair twice a year. It is where a buyer can see fifty categories in three days and where our office sits, ten minutes from most of it.

02

Foshan 佛山

Guangdong · Ceramic tile, sanitary ware, furniture, aluminium, lighting

Roughly half an hour from Guangzhou and the single most important address in the world for ceramic tile and bathroom fittings. Foshan also anchors furniture (Lecong, said to be the largest furniture trading zone anywhere), aluminium extrusion and door-and-window systems. If your container has tiles or a bathroom in it, it very likely began here.

03

Shenzhen 深圳

Guangdong · Electronics, mobile accessories, LED, smart devices

The electronics capital. Huaqiangbei market and the surrounding manufacturing belt cover components, consumer electronics, LED, batteries, chargers, audio and the entire long tail of accessories. Fast iteration, high competence, and prices that reward buyers who know exactly what specification they want.

04

Dongguan 东莞

Guangdong · Furniture, toys, shoes, paper & packaging, electronics assembly

The workshop between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Dongguan does volume manufacturing across furniture, footwear, toys and packaging, and it is where a great deal of assembly work for larger brands quietly happens.

05

Zhongshan 中山

Guangdong · Lighting, locks & hardware, home appliances

Guzhen town in Zhongshan is known as the lighting capital of China — thousands of lighting factories and showrooms in a few square kilometres. Small home appliances and door hardware sit alongside it.

06

Chaozhou & Shantou 潮汕

Guangdong · Sanitary ceramics, toys, food packaging

Eastern Guangdong. Chaozhou is a major source of ceramic sanitary ware; Shantou’s Chenghai district produces an enormous share of the world’s plastic toys.

07

Yiwu 义乌

Zhejiang · Small commodities, gifts, stationery, promotional goods

The world’s largest small-commodity market — an exhibition complex so large it is measured in districts, not aisles. Yiwu is unbeatable for mixed containers of low-value, high-variety goods: gifts, stationery, festive items, household plastics, hair accessories. Prices are low because margins are thin and volumes are vast.

08

Ningbo & Cixi 宁波

Zhejiang · Home appliances, moulds, electrical, stationery

A strong industrial base plus one of China’s deepest ports. Ningbo is a practical alternative loading port to Shenzhen and Shanghai, and Cixi is a centre for small appliances and electrical goods.

09

Wenzhou 温州

Zhejiang · Shoes, valves, low-voltage electrical, eyewear

Private enterprise in its most concentrated form. Footwear, electrical switchgear, valves and pumps, lighters and eyewear all cluster here.

10

Shanghai & Jiangsu 上海 · 江苏

East China · Machinery, chemicals, textiles, precision engineering

Higher-specification manufacturing and the country’s busiest container port. Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou host machinery, electrical equipment and precision components; Nantong is a textile and home-textile centre.

11

Shandong 山东

North China · Machinery, tyres, agricultural equipment, stone, chemicals

Heavy and agricultural machinery, tyres, construction equipment, granite and marble processing, and a large chemical base. Qingdao is the natural loading port.

12

Hebei & Tianjin 河北 · 天津

North China · Steel, hardware, wire mesh, bicycles, glass

Steel and metal products at scale — wire mesh from Anping, hardware from Yongnian, glass from Shahe, bicycles from Tianjin. Where price per tonne matters more than finish.

Understanding the market

Six things buyers learn the expensive way.

1. A trading company is not a factory

Most listings on the large B2B platforms belong to trading companies. That is not automatically bad — a good trading company adds real value in coordination and quality. But you should know which one you are talking to, because it changes the price, the flexibility and who is accountable when something is wrong.

2. The quoted price is rarely the landed price

EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP describe very different obligations. A cheap EXW quote plus inland trucking, export clearance, terminal handling, freight, destination charges, duty and delivery can land 30–60% above the number you were shown.

3. MOQ is negotiable — up to a point

Minimums exist because of setup: a colour change on an injection mould, a fabric dye lot, a printing plate. Where the constraint is real, no amount of asking moves it. Where it is habit, it moves easily. Knowing which is which saves months.

4. Samples and production are different things

A sample is made by a skilled worker with unlimited attention. Production is made at speed. The bridge between them is a written specification, an approved golden sample retained by both sides, and inspection before dispatch.

5. Chinese New Year moves everything

Factories close for two to four weeks around late January or February, and capacity is booked out for weeks before. Orders placed in December for February delivery are, in practice, orders for March or April. Plan around it and it costs nothing; ignore it and it costs a season.

6. Certification is market-specific

CE, SONCAP, SASO, PVoC, COC, FDA, RoHS, ISO — the requirement follows your destination port, not the factory. Establish it before production, because retro-fitting a certificate to finished goods is expensive and sometimes impossible.

Consolidation warehouse in Guangdong
Logistics reality

Getting it out is half the job.

Southern China is served by some of the busiest container ports on earth — Shenzhen (Yantian, Shekou), Guangzhou Nansha, Hong Kong — with Ningbo and Shanghai to the east and Qingdao to the north. Air freight moves through Guangzhou Baiyun and Shenzhen Bao'an; rail runs to Central Asia and Europe.

Which one you use depends on where your goods are made, where they are going, and how much of your working capital you want sitting on the water. We quote all of them, and we tell you when the cheapest option is not the right one.

  • Sea FCL — best cost per unit once you fill 20ft or 40ft
  • Sea LCL — shared container, right for early or trial orders
  • Air — for value density, urgency and samples
  • Rail — a middle path to Central Asia and Europe
  • Consolidation — several suppliers, one container, one document set

“Every product has a place in China where it is made best. Our job is to know which place, before you pay for the wrong one.”
