How to import
from China to Ghana.

A practical, end-to-end guide for Ghanaian importers — from choosing what to buy through to clearing your container at Tema. Written by the people who ship it.

Where to start

Most first orders fail
for the same reasons.

Ghana is where the largest share of our enquiries comes from, and the pattern in first-time importing is remarkably consistent. Goods bought from a photograph. A price that turned out not to include freight or duty. A supplier who was a trader, not a factory. Documents that did not match, holding the container at Tema while demurrage accrued.

Every one of those is avoidable, and none of the fixes are complicated.

Step by step

The sequence, start to finish.

01

Decide what, precisely

Not "tiles" but 600×600 polished porcelain, water absorption class, thickness, and the quantity in square metres. A price quoted against a vague description is quoted for the cheapest thing that matches it.

02

Find the right cluster

Tile and sanitary ware come from Foshan. Electronics from Shenzhen. Furniture from Foshan and Dongguan. Buying tile from an electronics trader costs you a middleman's margin for nothing.

03

Verify the supplier

Business licence, export history, and a short unedited video of the production line. A real factory finds this trivial. Pay only into a corporate account matching the invoice — never a personal account.

04

Sample, then approve in writing

For custom goods, approve a pre-production sample made from bulk materials. Keep a sealed golden sample. It settles every later argument.

05

Sort the paperwork before you ship

IDF, ICUMS declaration, certificate of origin, and any GSA conformity requirement for your product. Documents that do not match each other are the most common cause of delay at Tema.

06

Inspect before paying the balance

Standard terms are 30% deposit, 70% before shipment. That word "before" is your only leverage. Use it — inspect, get photographs, then release.

07

Consolidate, then ship

If you are buying from several suppliers, combine them into one container. One document set, one clearance, materially lower cost than three separate shipments.

08

Clear at Tema

Have your clearing agent lined up before arrival, with the full document set in hand. Demurrage starts quickly and is entirely avoidable.

Costs

What it actually costs.

The factory price is rarely more than 55–70% of what the goods cost you on your yard. Budget for all of it before you commit.

  • Factory price (EXW or FOB)
  • Inland trucking to port and export clearance
  • Ocean freight — Guangzhou/Shenzhen to Tema
  • Marine insurance (optional, usually worth it)
  • Import duty at your HS code, plus VAT, NHIL and GETFund levies
  • Terminal handling, clearing agent fees, delivery order
  • Trucking Tema to your warehouse
  • Demurrage if clearance is slow — avoidable, and expensive

Ask any supplier or forwarder for the all-in landed cost per unit at your warehouse door. If they cannot answer, you do not yet have a quote.

Timing

How long it takes.

StageTypical duration
Enquiry to quotation1–5 working days
Sampling7–20 days
Production20–60 days by category
Inspection and loading3–7 days
Sea transit to Tema30–42 days
Clearance at Tema3–10 days
Total, realistically2.5–4 months
Add 3–5 weeks if production falls across Chinese New Year (late January / February). Factories close for weeks and capacity books out well beforehand.

Questions Ghanaian buyers ask

Straight answers.

How much money do I need to start importing from China?
It depends entirely on the product. A shared-container (LCL) trial order of general merchandise can start relatively small; a full container of tile or furniture is a much larger commitment. The honest advice is to start with one LCL shipment, learn the process, and scale from there rather than committing your capital to a first full container.
Is it cheaper to fly to China myself?
Sometimes — particularly if you are buying across many categories and want to see goods in person. The Canton Fair twice a year is a good reason to travel. But flights, hotels and two weeks of your time are a real cost, and a trip without preparation often produces business cards rather than orders. We plan itineraries and accompany buyers for exactly this reason.
Can I buy from Alibaba directly?
You can, and many people do successfully. The risks are that most listings are trading companies rather than factories, that quality is unverified until it arrives, and that you carry the freight and documentation yourself. Trade Assurance protects payment, not product quality.
What is the cheapest way to ship to Ghana?
Sea freight, full container (FCL) once you can fill a 20ft — roughly 28 CBM. Below about 12–15 CBM, shared container (LCL) is usually cheaper. Between those, price both, because LCL rates rise faster than people expect.
Do I need a clearing agent at Tema?
In practice, yes. Clearance requires ICUMS declaration and familiarity with the process. Have one appointed before your container arrives, not after — demurrage accrues from day one.
How do I avoid being scammed?
Pay only corporate accounts matching your invoice. Verify any change of bank details by voice call on a number you already had. Ask for a factory video. Start small. Inspect before releasing the balance. Those five habits eliminate the large majority of risk.
